Instinct is a personal AI agent that you text or call like a human assistant. It connects to your email, calendar and messaging apps and then carries out tasks for you, such as booking appointments, ordering groceries or disputing a bill. It is built by a San Francisco startup founded in 2025 by Noah Shinn, and as of October 2026 it is invite-only and costs nothing to use.

That is the short answer. The longer one matters if you are deciding whether to join the waitlist, or whether to let colleagues connect a work inbox to it. Everything below is based on the company’s own site, its terms and privacy policy, and reporting from TechCrunch, Fortune and Business Insider. We have not used Instinct ourselves; access is by invitation.

Who makes Instinct AI?

The legal entity is Spear Street Technology, Inc., trading as Instinct, based in San Francisco, according to the Instinct privacy policy. The official site is instinct.com. Some coverage has printed other domains; instinct.ai is a parked domain and has nothing to do with the product.

The founder and CEO is Noah Shinn, who is 23. Before Instinct he was one of the first employees at Sierra, Bret Taylor’s enterprise AI agent company, which he joined in 2023 as a research scientist. Fortune reports that he left Northeastern University in 2023 and, as an undergraduate, co-authored “Reflexion: Language Agents with Verbal Reinforcement Learning”. In other words, Instinct was started by someone who has worked on language agents since university, and the chat window is the thin layer on top.

How much is Instinct worth?

Funding has moved fast. On 26 August 2026 Instinct raised a $250 million Series B at a $2.5 billion valuation, co-led by Index Ventures and Benchmark, bringing total funding to $350 million (TechCrunch). One month later, on 28 September, it announced a $1 billion Series C at a $10 billion valuation from Sequoia, Benchmark and Coatue (PYMNTS). Earlier investors include Kleiner Perkins and Conviction.

A few figures circulate without confirmation. Some outlets list the Series B at $2.25 billion, which is probably the pre-money figure, but no primary source says so. Reports of a $75 million Series A appear only on aggregator sites. The company disclosed no revenue or user numbers with the Series C.

How does Instinct work?

There is no new app to learn. The company describes Instinct as an assistant that “understands what you’re working on and what’s important to you” and uses a phone and computer the way a person would. The main button on the homepage says “Text Instinct”.

In practice you reach it through:

  • SMS or WhatsApp, by text or voice call (TechCrunch)
  • iMessage, where Series C coverage mentions location-aware features
  • a web app at app.instinct.com, plus Mac and mobile apps covered by the privacy policy

What makes it an agent and not a chatbot is what sits behind the chat. Instinct can be connected to your email, messaging apps and calendar, and to device audio, location and screen. The privacy policy names Google Workspace in detail: Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides and Tasks. You can also give it usernames and passwords for third-party accounts so it can sign in on your behalf.

Since September 2026 Instinct also has its own email addresses, which it uses to sign up for services, contact businesses and chase replies (TechCrunch). That detail is easy to miss but important: the agent now acts in the world under an identity that is neither yours nor the business’s.

Three features were added in quick succession:

  1. Instinct Concierge, announced on 16 September, places phone calls for you, for example to a restaurant with no online booking or a dentist’s cancellation list. It is in early access.
  2. Trusted Person Network, part of the 28 September release, lets Instinct agents talk to each other to coordinate plans, share files and know when you have arrived somewhere.
  3. Group chats, announced on 5 October, let you add Instinct to a group thread, including friends who do not have an account (TechCrunch). This is rolling out to early access users first.

What can Instinct AI do?

The examples on the homepage are deliberately mundane: disputing an unwarranted bill, sending birthday gifts, ordering groceries, scheduling doctor’s appointments and planning a weekend away. Shinn told TechCrunch that early users have planned cross-country road trips and weddings, bought concert tickets and cancelled subscriptions. Other reported uses include cleaning up inboxes, booking airport rides, shopping for insurance, finding rental flats and calling insurance companies.

Travel is the largest category. Shinn told Fortune that Instinct handles “roughly $1 billion in annual transaction volume”, about half of it travel. That is his own figure and has not been audited, so treat it as a claim, not a metric.

In group chats the use cases are social logistics: trips, event tickets, fantasy leagues, carpools and Thanksgiving coordination.

The pattern across all of these is the same. The task has many small steps, involves several services that do not talk to each other, and ends in a booking, a purchase or a message. That is where a language model with tool access saves real time, and also where a mistake costs real money.

How do you get access to Instinct?

You need an invitation. Instinct ran a private beta from February 2026, and in August it opened an invite-only beta in which each user receives five invites to pass on. Shinn has said it will stay invite-only while the company is “actively bringing up more compute” (Business Insider).

Your options are:

  • get an invite from an existing user
  • join the waitlist on instinct.com
  • if you already use Instinct, ask it to put you on the waitlist for group chats

Invites have been resold on eBay; Shinn acknowledged this himself. Buying one is a poor idea. You would be handing your phone number and, later, your inbox to a service through an account path you cannot verify.

You must be 18 or older. The terms say the service is operated in the United States and that users elsewhere are responsible for complying with their local laws. Instinct has not published a list of supported countries, and the privacy policy does not mention GDPR. For readers in the UK and the EU, that absence is worth noting before connecting anything.

How many people use it?

The company has not said. The Information reported in mid-September that Instinct had more than 100,000 users, a figure PYMNTS repeated; Instinct has not confirmed it. Shinn told Fortune the company had spent “$0 on marketing so far”, so growth so far has come from invites and word of mouth.

Is Instinct AI free?

Yes, for now. Fortune calls it a “free personal assistant”, and there is no published price. The terms of service leave room for fees later: charges would be in US dollars, payments would be non-refundable, and the company can change pricing at any time. Shinn has reportedly said he does not want to charge users directly, and advertising has been mentioned as a possible revenue source, but no plan has been confirmed.

Note that “free” covers the agent, not what it does. When Instinct buys something for you, the terms state that you, not Instinct, are making the purchase, and any dispute is between you and the seller.

What are the concerns?

Instinct went viral alongside critical coverage. In August, TechCrunch reported tester complaints, including an email sent without checking first and inbox data still summarised after Google access was revoked. In September a user posted screenshots that appeared to show another person’s data in his chat; Shinn said it was a model hallucination and not a data breach. Both explanations remain unverified by any independent party.

How does Instinct compare with Meta Muse and ChatGPT Dots?

Instinct is no longer alone. Meta launched Muse on 8 September 2026, available in its own app, on the web and in WhatsApp. OpenAI announced Dots on 29 September, running inside ChatGPT for Pro and Business Premium subscribers. The three products differ in who can get in, which channels they use and how they handle permissions. The side-by-side is in Instinct vs Meta Muse vs ChatGPT Dots.

One sign of where this is heading: in early October PYMNTS reported that Instinct, Sierra, Meta, Shopify, Stripe, Walmart and others are working on an open standard for how personal agents interact with businesses. If that holds, companies will soon need to decide how their own systems respond when a customer’s agent, not the customer, is on the other end.

What this means for businesses

Instinct shows how quickly people will hand real accounts to an agent that is convenient enough. Your staff may already be among them, and your customers’ agents will soon be emailing and calling your support team. AI Superior builds agents for companies with the opposite starting point: scoped permissions, approval steps for anything that spends money or sends messages, and logs you can audit.
